Music Education

What does Arts Award offer music educators?

  • A framework for whole class ensemble music making and singing at Key Stage 1 and 2
  • A framework for Key Stage 3 curriculum music
  • Extension options for Key Stage 4 and 5 exam students and graded music exam students, giving them an extra qualification which demonstrates leadership while building their knowledge of career paths
  • Support for children and young people with special educational needs and those who need adapted musical instruments or assistive technology
  • Measurable outcomes for project funders and other stakeholders

Challenging and inclusive

All levels of Arts Award involve a degree of participation, reflection and gathering evidence appropriate to the level. Evidence can be provided by children and young people in a wide range of formats including written evidence and/or illustrations; blogs; social media; audio and visual recording; as well as Makaton, signs and symbols. We offer free resources to support evidencing Arts Award, and centres can develop their own methods.

This means musical skills, knowledge and experience can be demonstrated and accredited, up to a possible Level 3 (including UCAS points with Arts Award Gold) for:

  • Gifted young musicians who may struggle with literacy and/or reading music
  • Young disabled musicians
  • Unusual instruments, vocal styles, ensembles and genres
  • Digital music, sound production, and sound recording
  • Music promotion and management

Accomplished young musicians will find that Arts Award develops leadership skills and encourages wider exploration of the world of live and recorded music, music training and a wide range of careers.
